Knysna Elephant Park

The elephant park is based in the Knysna Forest where thousands of elephants used to roam wild. The numbers gradually dwindled down to single figures, so the park was established to try to build the numbers back up again, although they will never reach the numbers that were once there. The park also takes in orphaned elephants from other areas of the country. Elephants are often still shot & killed if they persistantly feed on farmers' crops.

As you can see from the pictures below, we were able to feed & stroke the elephants quite freely. Some of the baby ones were really cute.
